Best Beaches Around Barcelona

From party beaches, to hidden havens, this list has something for every type of beachgoer. Most beaches listed can be accessed by train and are less than an hour away from downtown Barcelona. Please be sure to carefully check and confirm train schedules to and from your destination.

1ALTAFULLA Costa Dorada
Renfe train departs from Sants Estació.

Altafulla is a quiet beach in a small fishing village on the Costa Dorada outside of Barcelona. It is marked by a beautiful castle overlooking a cliff at the end of the beach. If you travel by train, be ready to exit quickly when you arrive in Altafulla, as it’s an easy stop to miss. If you’re coming from Barcelona and arrive in Tarragona, you’ve gone too far. The beach is a few minutes walk from the train station. Recommended for a hiking, camping or just having a relaxing day.
2SITGES | Costa Dorada
Renfe train departs from Passeig de Gracia.

Get ready for a fun, action-packed day (and night) if you head to Sitges! From beaches to shops to clubs, this gay beach town has so much to see and do that you’ll want to bring a few changes of clothes so you can do it all. Be sure to check out Sitges’ carnaval in February and film festival in October. Recommended for an adventurous day trip.
3SANT POL DE MAR | Costa del Maresme
Accessible by car only.

It may not be the easiest beach to find, but it’s definitely worth the trouble. Clean and worry-free, Sant Pol de Mar is the perfect escape from bustling Barcelona. It’s also home to a charming restaurant that serves up delicious paellas and cold beers. What more could you want?! Recommended for a vacation from your vacation.
4CABRERA DE MAR | Costa del Maremse
Renfe train departs from Placa Catalunya.

What sets this beach apart from neighboring beaches along Costa Maresme is Al Faru, a very unique beach bar or “chiringuito” that makes its appearance each summer at Cabrera de Mar. With hammocks, throw pillows and ambiance galore, it’s a beachgoer’s fantasy . . . not to mention the handsome staff who build impressive beachscapes around the bar at sunset. Recommended for a sunset drink.
5MONGAT NORD | Costa del Maresme
Renfe train departs from Placa Catalunya.

If you don’t feel like dealing with the hoards of Erasmus students, litter and pesty beer vendors at the Barcelona city beaches, Mongat Nord is a great alternative just a few train stops away. Like most beaches near Barcelona, Mongat Nord gets crowded on the weekend, but is more spacious and clean than city beaches. You can even hang around for a few sunset drinks and still make it back to Barcelona in time for dinner (please note that there are two train stops for Mongat; we recommend Mongat Nord). Recommended as an alternative to Barcelona city beaches.
6OCATA Costa del Maresme
Renfe train departs from Placa Catalunya.

Ocata is very similar to Montgat Nord, but since it is farther down and the fare is higher, the city crowd tends to taper off here. Like Montgard Nord, it is a fairly spacious beach. Recommended as an alternative to Barcelona city beaches.
7BLANES |  Costa Brava
Renfe train departs from Placa Catalunya.

Most of Costa Brava’s beaches are not accessible by train, which is why Blanes (pronounced “Blah-nays”) made our list. This charming beach town has something for everyone. Don’t miss the annual international fireworks competition in July. Recommended for an adventurous day trip.
8EL BOGATELL | Costa Garraf
Metro yellow line.

El Bogatell is one of the more tolerable city beaches in Barcelona. It’s at it’s best after the sun goes down, when the bars switch into chill out mode. El Bogatell beach is also a popular spot for sunset picnics. Recommended for an evening under the stars.
9BARCELONETA |  Costa Garraf
Metro yellow line.

Perfect for a crazy night out . . . or even a crazy day out. Packed with as many beach bars as tourists, Barceloneta is the place to go if you’re looking to meet up with other young travelers. Be especially careful with your belongings here (see 10 Tips to Avoid Getting Robbed). Recommended for a party on the beach.
10VILA OLIMPICA |  Costa Garraf
Metro yellow line.

Vila Olímpica is the epicenter of the city beaches, hosting a variety of restaurants, shops and clubs, as well as a cinema, casino and marina. Whether you want to chill on the beach or check out the scene, Vila Olímpica is a must-do! Recommended for the relaxed or energetic beachgoer.
